Yeah. The way Phoenix made it sound was that it's almost more like a popularity contest. You do more and get your name out there and the people we're supposedly helping begin supporting us. Which...kind of goes against the whole idea of being a hero, I think, but nothing about this place has made a lot of sense to start with.
I've never heard of a competition lasting for eight weeks either.
Yeah that's a mood. [it's mumbled to himself, and he glances at the ceiling. ]
I'd like to make the point again that if they'd just left us with our original abilities we could beat up their villains and get out of here a lot faster. That's what this is all about, isn't it? The competition's just a guise for fixing their problems here.
[ which like. he is used to and doesn't entirely mind when people are struggling but come tf on! can't his world stop being threatened for more than a few months at a time!? ]
If they just wanted to outsource all their problem-fixing, they could've had us do a stupid competition even with all our powers. Handicapping us like this makes it feel more like a game to them.
I'm used to being outsourced. That's sort of what we're meant for. But we've never had to be in a situation we couldn't use our training or our powers or our weapons. So what gives? What makes this place so special the rules can get changed?
[ ...hm. ]
Fox mentioned the competition was probably created by a villain or something, so you're probably close. This is a game for someone else.
It's a little more complicated than that. It's more like...when we reach a certain age, we start training and take on...assignments? Things that are meant to be completed but are too minor for people above us.
[ he could really just explain what he is what what they do but he's not sure how well "i'm half-god" will be received right now. ]
It's either a stupid villain, an overconfident villain, or an underling of someone a lot more powerful that we won't even hear about for weeks. Take your pick.
It could be. But it could also just be someone genuinely trying to help. A city official or something. Either they don't care about us as long as we clean things up, or they don't even realize what a mess they're making.
...I guess that could still fall under the 'underling' category, though.
[ excuse, you are only like a year older than him daniel. ]
Depends. [ yeah. ] Some of us start as young as seven or eight. Some are closer to fifteen or sixteen at the latest. I started when I was ten.
[ that's a fair point though, and he seems to pause in that. ]
From what I heard, Oceanside City was destroyed in a villain attack about a month ago. If this is the state of the city now after that long of a time, they're probably in more trouble than we really think they are.
Then I stand by it being a bad deal. Sounds like someone is violating some child labor laws.
Hmmm...so they bring us all in as a last ditch effort to prop the place up? Keep the bad guys out long enough for them to rebuild? It's a solid plan, I guess...you know, aside from the part where it's happening to us.
Can child labor laws be violated when the ones putting in the requests are the parents? [ asking for a friend. ]
It's possible. The worst part is that it makes sense and it's a strategy that could probably work. The leaders have been here for some months already, and if it's only been the eight of them I can see why they need the extra help. What I don't see is why they waited so long, and why us. Nobody's been able to answer that part for me either. It's not like everyone here has had experience with this kind of thing before.
Good question. I'd say maybe they picked at random, but if they have such detailed profiles on all of us, then they clearly did their research first. Maybe they wanted different types of people, to...make sure all kinds of "heroics" [ yes he does finger quotes ] get covered?
[ there's a little snort and he waves it off. that's a topic for a totally different time. ]
Someone asked about the profiles. Supposedly the penguins wrote them. [ which. why. ] Prinnies, or something? So at least we know who to blame for that invasion of privacy.
[ he considers this. ] That's a strong possibility though. Without knowing what we're up against, it's hard to say what kind of people will be the best for saving the city and everything. Some people are used to combat and some people are used to easier work. We're going to need all kinds, even if I still don't know how the teams were made.
The penguins, huh? So then there's a chance the profiles can be wrong, too. [ he does not trust the penguins to be completely accurate all the time. even if the profiles are eerily detailed. ]
I suppose so. But if it's supervillains we're supposed to dealing with, I don't know how anyone who's not used to combat is supposed to handle it.
There's a chance, but...if I'm completely honest mine has a lot of stuff that is right. It's just missing other stuff, too. Guess the penguins can't be right all the time.
Oh. [ right. hand-to-hand exists and is more common for some people. ]
Hand to hand then. [ but he's like. ignoring that slip-up and venturing on to his other point. ] Worst case scenario we find people who are trained to help give a few crash courses to people who aren't. The basics for survival. It can't be that hard.
Right. All of the powers are public on the database, even if the names don't make it always obvious what they are. If people are struggling with how to use theirs, they could even find people with something similar to train that way. Learn to use their abilities even better to carry them through the competition.
[ look the guy's catchphrase is going ghost, he can make some reasonable assumptions but he's not sure how to ask!! ]
It's about the best I can think of for now. The people that want to sit out can do that, but I think there'd be enough people among us who would be willing to help. Even if it's just pairing them up with someone on their team. I doubt there's a team out there that doesn't have at least one fighter.
[ otherwise that would be kind of insane? to him, anyway. ]

A "hero competition" sounds weird, though.

This is so stupid. And such a waste of time.

Anyway, if it is a villain, it must be a stupid one, then. Who abducts people so they could get their asses kicked by them for the next eight weeks?

no subject
Combat experience? Oh, I've got plenty.

Really? What kind? Longblade? Shortblade? I mean you could be an archer but that doesn't seem to fit.
[ there is a misunderstanding here. ]

The powers should help, too. I mean, not for us, this is a downgrade, but for people who've never had to fight before, it'll probably go a long way.

Crowdsourcing the power knowledge. Now there's an idea.
Unless people don't want to help someone on another team in case it might sabotage their own chances of winning.

It's a start. Maybe there'll even be "easy mode" things them to do. Ease them into it. [ shrugs a little, he doesn't know ]
