There are some, like the witches and fairies, who've always known what we are. Most of the others don't. And we are made to live our stories every time they're told. Over and over, never knowing that we're doing it.
But at one point a woman went to a very powerful witch to ask the reason why everything seemed to go wrong for her. And this witch revealed to her that she was being punished because she was created only to be a villain.
No, I agree. It's a really rotten thing, to be forced into that role forever.
[She grimaces.]
Well. After she heard about that, she found a way to um. Get enough magic to leave the world of stories. She traded her name to the witch and also...ate her daughters... [SWALLOWS THICKLY. ANYWAY!!] Um. And she was able to get into a place between stories, where every version of all of our tales that have ever been told are kept.
Then she pulled out the other versions of herself and ate them too. And then she started eating other characters like herself. Wicked Queens and grandmothers, becoming bigger and more god-like as she went. And eventually, she began to meddle with the stories, to create a sort of situation that like...would give her the power to go after the Authors themselves? But also, other characters and forces were becoming aware of this because of her meddling, and a lot of them had their own plans on what to do, so she — and they — began changing things, trying to arrange things in their own favour, finding allies, awakening other characters to the truth and altering other stories.
Everything began to go very, very wrong. For me, instead of being woken up after a hundred years of sleep by True Love's First Kiss, I woke up alone and covered in briars, and the bodies of all the princes who tried to save me were caught in the thorns.
It took me, oh...six months? To claw my way out of my kingdom. I didn't find anyone else awake or alive.
